Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) – Holmes Junior High

Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) allows students to complete schoolwork independently for a short, pre-approved absence while remaining enrolled at Holmes Junior High.

STIS is designed for temporary absences only and must meet district and state requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for STIS, all of the following must be met:

  • Requests must be submitted at least 5 school days before the first day of absence

    • Requests submitted with less notice may not be approved and require administrative review

  • STIS may be approved for 1–10 school days per request

  • Students may not exceed 15 total STIS days in a single school year

  • Students enrolled in Davis School for Independent Study (DSIS) for more than 15 days during the same school year are not eligible for STIS

  • The student must return to school on or before June 1

  • STIS must be approved before the absence begins

Submitting a request does not guarantee approval.

How to Request STIS

  1. Parent/Guardian submits an STIS request (via the district form).

  2. Holmes staff reviews the request to confirm eligibility.

  3. If approved:

    • A Written Agreement will be provided for parent/guardian and student signatures.

    • Assignment Sheets will be prepared for each class.

STIS cannot begin until the Written Agreement is signed and returned.

Assignments & Work Expectations

  • Teachers assign 1 hour of work per day of STIS for each class

  • Assigned work may differ from in-class activities

  • All assignments must result in a work product (example: notes, written responses, completed assignments)

  • Students are responsible for:

    • Completing all assigned work during the STIS dates

    • Labeling all work with:

      • Student name

      • Class name

      • Attendance credit value

Returning From STIS & Attendance Credit

  • Students must turn in all STIS work on their first day back at school

  • Teachers review completed work and determine hours earned

  • Attendance credit is based on work completed, not time spent

  • Attendance credit is calculated by administration and recorded by the attendance office

Incomplete or missing work may result in partial or no attendance credit.

Important Notes for Families

  • STIS is not intended for extended travel or repeated absences

  • Late requests and incomplete paperwork may delay or prevent approval

  • Teachers are not responsible for recreating lost assignments or forms

  • STIS is an auditable attendance program and must follow state guidelines

  • STIS requests received after 4 PM will be processed the next business day.

If you have questions, please contact the Holmes Registrar before submitting a request.
