AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a year-long elective class that enhances students’ academic skills and prepares them for success at four-year colleges. While in an AVID class, students work on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organizational, and reading skills.
AVID students will also participate in specific AVID activities such as visiting college campuses, exploring career paths, guest speakers, and other extra-curricular and community activities. Student acceptance is based on AVID criteria and an application process which takes place in the spring. Teachers sometimes recommend students for the AVID elective.
The year-long elective is offered at Holmes at 8th and 9th grade. For 9th grade, the AVID elective fulfills the "g" of a-g coursework for CSU and UC college admissions.
If some of the following are true for you, AVID may be the right elective for you:
- I feel I could take more advanced classes with some support.
- I would be one of the first in my family to attend college.
- I am earning mostly Cs right now, but really want to earn Bs and As in my classes.
- I am motivated to improve my writing, thinking, organization, collaboration, and reading skills.
- I am eager to take more ownership of my education.
- I am willing to be open-minded, work with other students and tutors, and commit to making positive changes to the way I approach school
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Is AVID a class just to get homework done?
A: The AVID elective focuses on skills that will help you organize your time more efficiently. Students bring questions from their homework assignments and projects and discuss them, but it is not a dedicated time just for completing homework.
